The term sterilisation is spelt s-t-e-r-i-l-i-s-a-t-i-o-n is the United Kingdom and other countries of the world where British English is used. This is considered to be the universally-accepted spelling of the word sterilisation. In the United States of America, however, the word sterilisation is spelt s-t-e-r-i-l-i-z-a-t-i-o-n.

The term sterilisation is defined as a surgical procedure. The word is used to refer to an operation which renders an animal or a human being (irrespective of whether the animal or human being is of the male or female gender) impotent. In other words, sterilisation is a surgical procedure which renders an animal or a human being unable to procreate, that is to give birth to offspring.

People go in for sterilisation usually when they are suffering from a lifestyle-related disorder such as diabetes or obesity, which hamper their chances to give birth to a child. These diseases can be reversed by making long-term changes in one's lifestyles, which include working out, following a diet plan and taking medications.
