England forms part of Great Britain together with Scotland and Wales (In fact, if you asked your question in either of those 2 places you'd probably be lynched !). Great Britain together with Northen Ireland comprise the United Kingdom.

England is a separate country from Scotland, Northern Ireland (the Republic of Ireland is not part of Britain and is an entirely different country altogether) and Wales, which are also separate countries. However, these remain under the same reign of Queen Elizabeth and the same Prime Minister, who is currently Gordon Brown, however they do have their own parliaments, which makes up Great Britain, essentially the United Kingdom.

The term Great Britain comes from when Queen Victora reigned in the 1800's, where she also ruled over several other countries across the world making up the British Empire  which stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface, including India, Austrailia, North America (until they fought for independance) and many more.
