Catalitic Converter Problem
I recently bought a 2003 Chrysler Neon Automatic. The Engine Management light went on and the agents report it as the Catalitic Converter needing replacement. The cost of this in South Africa is huge and here we don't have any legislation saying that a vehicle must have a catalytic converter. All I want to do is defeat the sensor on the converter, but I have no idea where it sits. I know there are two. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The agents won't help as they of course want to sell me a new one.

IF you were to defeat the sensor on the converter the car will not run right. The sensor that detects a cat. Defect is usually the o2 sensor but a converter is only one of many things this sensors maintaines. Your best bet is to replace the converter

If you have access to a scanner, look at the o2 sensors, if the converter is working properly the one or ones in front of the cat will read richer than the ones behind. I have taken converters loose and knocked the catylitist out and had vehicles run better. I don't know how yours will react but you could try it and replace it later if you have to. Is the car running badly. You also can have other things affecting the way the converter is working, many things affect the operation of the converted. Burnt up spark plugs will set a lean code. A stuck thermostat will not let the converted operate properly. A vacuum leak will set a lean code.
