How Do I Change Rear Brake Pads On A Yamaha 1100?

Answer Question

I just changed mine yesterday.  I had to remove the saddlebags, of course. The two bolts that hold the caliper to the swing arm are on the outside of the wheel, on mine, a 2001 custom, they have 12mm bolt heads. Since I could not see how to remove the two pins that hold the pads in the caliper, I just removed the brake line and took the caliper off completely.  I did have to remove the right side passenger peg to do that. There is a rubber cover on the bottom of the caliper. Pry it off with a screwdriver and the clips that hold the pins are under it. If you can get to that with the caliper on the bike, you won't have to worry about bleeding the system like I did. Once I had the caliper off the bike I cleaned it up and then used the old pads and a screwdriver to push the pistons back into the caliper. I put the new pads into the caliper. There is a small retainer that fits in the bottom of the caliper, at the bottom of the pads and is held in place by the pins. It is pretty easy to put it together and then put the rubber cover back on. I bolted the caliper back onto the swingarm and then re-attached the brake hose. The rear brake reservoir is right in front of the right side floor board and is bolted to the frame with a bolt that has an 8mm head. The bike uses DOT4 brake fluid,so make sure you use the right kind. It was pretty easy to bleed out the brake by myself.
