History suggests that it was positive. Societies which attempted to enforce financial equality, such as USSR, eventually collapsed due to inefficient production. People are not motivated to work hard and smart if they are not benefiting on a personal or family level. Even China is coming around to this viewpoint, as more and more of its commercial activities are becoming privatised.
