Can Mp3 Players Damage Your Hearing?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Any type of personal music player, mp3, cd player etc can damage hearing if the music is played at too high a level.  Any noise that registers above 85-90 decibels can risk doing irreversible damage to hearing.
However, they can be used very safely and it is only if the music is very loud that hearing will be damaged.  As a general rule, it is wise to make sure that when the music is playing, you can still hear a normal conversation without too much difficulty.  Most listeners will actually find that for the sake of comfort, the level at which they set the volume will be in the range of 80-85 decibels.  However, some people will insist on being 'cool' and having the volume set so that it blasts into the ears.  How cool they will look with a hearing aid by the time they are 40 is perhaps debatable....
