A Republic is a form of government. The president is the head of the republican. The power is given to the citizens of the country to vote for the officers and representatives of the country. The officers and the representatives elected by the people run the country and carry out the functions of the government. The United States is an example of a republic. The former president of United States, Thomas Jefferson had proposed in the Declaration of Independence in 1776 to reject the monarchy of the British and turn into republican citizens. The republican form of government has remained constant in the United States.

A republican is either something that has characteristics or features relating to a republic. It also refers to a person who favours a form of government that is Republic in nature. The word is also used to refer to a member of the Republican Party in the United States.

Republican is a type of political thought that states that its form of government is represented popularly amongst its people and one that enjoys popular consent. In most countries that were run by a monarchy the change has almost always been a republic. That is in France the form of government was transformed into a republic after the revolution, similarly in Iraq where Saddam's dictatorship has given way to a Republic. Oddly enough Saddam also claimed to be a Republican and his elite units were known as the Republican Guards.
