When Was Malta Taken Over By Britain?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Malta has certainly had a varied history.  It was under Phoenician, Carthaginian, Greek and then Roman rule.  It fell to the Arabs in 870 AD and to Norman Sicily in 1090.  Spain then took control in 1282, and the Hapsburg Empire took it in 1530.  It then went to Bonapartist France in 1798, only to be taken by the British in 1800.
British sovereignty was then confirmed in 1815 by the Congress of Vienna.
In 1869 after the Suez Canal had been opened, Malta became a major British Base.
Britain gave Malta its first constitution in 1887 and its first elected assembly in 1921.  From 1929 the Britsh were in conflict with the Catholic Church who were very strong in Malta, as Mussolini's (Catholic) Italy staked a claim to Malta.
Due to Malta's strategic importance the island withstood much bombing in the Second World War and for this was given the George Cross by Britain in 1942.  A further reward was granted in 1947 when Malta was given self-government, although many islanders still wanted to remain British.
