Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The word "morse" is actually the French name of the Walrus. In English of old a lot of French words were in use. Many words in English can be traced to the middle and old French. It is possible that Morse was just the French word being used in English.  The name "walrus" is taken from the Dutch. It is believed that the name was actually a combination of two different Dutch words namely "walvis" meaning a "whale" and "ros" meaning a horse. Walruses in the Pacific Ocean can weigh as much as a thousand nine hundred kilos and those in the Atlantic are slightly lighter at a thousand six hundred. Walrus come in scientific classification under the Genus of "Odobenus" within the Family of "Odobenidae". The species itself goes by the name of "Odobenus Rosmarus".
