Why Do The Sun And Moon Look The Same Size In The Sky?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

It is a perception issue. Have you ever seen photos where someone will be standing and it appears that they are holding someone else in their hand? The person being held is actually a further distance away than the person who is holding them. This gives the impression of a size difference when actually it is a perception issue of something being closer than the object in the background. The moon is closer to the earth than the sun, as such they appear similar in size while the difference is far different. Just as if you ever see Mars or another planet in the night sky it appears as a small speck rather than the massive planet they are in reality.

But given they do appear the same, they do not always match up exactly. That is why you can have an Annular solar eclipse where the moon appears smaller than the sun and you see a bright circular ring at Total. Annulars are no fun.
