    The Sex Pistols one of the most celebrated rock bands who achieved iconic status in the late seventies and are credited with heralding the punk music era in the UK evolved from a band known as Strand. The founding members of Sex Pistols were vocalist Johnny Rotten, guitarist Steve Jones, drummer Paul Cook and bassist Glen Matlock; Strand was formed in 1972 with Jones and Cook as members along with other musicians like Wally Nightingale, Stephen Hayes and Jim Mackin.

    The band was helped in its dress designing by Malcolm McLaren who later went on to manage the Sex Pistols; McLaren along with his partner Vivienne Westwood owned a boutique that specialized in clothes that were to become popular as a symbol of the punk rock scene. Glen Matlock joined the band in 1975 now renamed as The Swankers followed Johnny Rotten after which the band became known as Sex Pistols the name itself being coined by McLaren.
