"Prince Caspian: The Return to Narnia" is the second published book in the Chronicles of Narnia series and the fourth in the series chronologically. It was published in 1951 and written by CS Lewis.

The story begins with Peter Pevensie and his brother Edmund and sisters Susan and Lucy, being transported to a beach whilst waiting for the train to school. The beach is located near to a ruined castle and the children recognise the area as Cair Paravel, where they spent fifteen years ruling as kings and queens of Narnia. They come across a treasure vault where many of their items, including Susan’s bow and Peter’s sword, are stored. Susan’s discovers that her horn, which she uses when help is needed, is missing.

The amount of time that passes in Narnia differs to the time that passes in our world. When the children previously returned to their own world, they spent only a year there before ending up on the beach whereas in Narnia, years have passed since they left to return home.

Later, on the same day that they return to Narnia, the children rescue a dwarf named Trumpkin, who has been captured by soldiers. The children learn from Trumpkin that whilst they have been away, 1300 years have passed. During that time, Narnia was invaded by the Telmarines, who are a group of men. The children learn that Narnia is ruled by King Miraz and Queen Prunaprismia. They discover that Miraz’s nephew, Prince Caspian, should be the rightful ruler. Caspian’s father, who was king, was killed by Miraz, who took over the throne. Once Prince Caspian learned of his uncle’s actions, he fled to the forest and ended up being looked after by a badger and two dwarfs, one of them Trumpkin.

Later, Caspian was informed by Doctor Cornelius, his tutor, that King Miraz would be arriving with his army. He told Caspian, the badger and the dwarves that they must escape and that they must go to Aslan’s home. During their escape, they were followed and attacked by Miraz and his army and nearly defeated. They considered using the horn (the same horn that Susan lost) to call for help. Trumpkin was sent to Cair Paravel, where he was captured and rescued by the children.

After the children rescue Trumpkin, they travel with him to meet Caspian. Their journey is difficult and at one point Lucy spots Aslan and tells the others that they must follow him, but they do not believe that she has seen him. Later that night, Aslan appears and tells Lucy that she must get the others to follow his path. She does so and they set off again. Edmund, Peter and Trumpkin are sent by Aslan to help Caspian and the others. Upon their arrival, they see Caspian, the badger and Doctor Cornelius talking to the other dwarf, who attempts to convince them to aid him in resurrecting the White Witch, who was killed by Aslan during a battle in Narnia. His plan is to bring the White Witch back to life in order to defeat Miraz and his army. The discussion causes a fight to break out and the dwarf and two of his friends who were in on the plan are killed.

Peter later challenges Miraz to a duel. Miraz agrees, but is defeated. The Telmarines, who were part of Miraz’s army try to escape, but eventually surrender after becoming trapped in the Great River as a result of their bridge being destroyed.

Aslan tells them that they must either choose to stay in Narnia with Caspian as ruler, or go home to their own world. Half of the Telmarines are transported with the children, who end up back at the railway station where they were at the start of the story.
