What Is The Meaning Of Double Taxation?

Answer Question

As is apparent, the term double taxation is from the domain of finance and business. This is a form of taxation seen in corporate entities. Basically, as the term implies, it is taxation of the same earnings at two different levels. Simply put, in a scenario where you have your own corporation, there are two levels of taxes that you have to pay. First up, the corporation, as an entity, has to pay a corporate tax. Over this, being the individual who owns the corporation, you would have to pay income tax to the government based on your individual earnings for the company. In financial jargon, it is a form of taxation for earnings at the entity level (corporation as an entity) as well as at the shareholder level (owner as an individual shareholder).
Double taxation is considered to be one of the negative aspects to owning a corporation. Another example of double taxation is a scenario where foreign investments are taxed in the country where the investment was made, and again when the invested amount has been repatriated to the investment maker's native country. However, there are now regulatory measures in place in many countries to ensure that investors are not required to shoulder this double burden.
