Take the DVD player out of the box and put it wherever you wish to. Connect it to the television set by the cable that must have come with the DVD player. Such cables are usually of the composite variety, having three connections at both ends, all differently colored as red, white and yellow. You have to connect the cables to the corresponding plugs on the television set, that is, yellow cable into yellow plug etc. Then, plug in the power cable of the player into an outlet. Switch on the TV and the DVD player.  Set your TV on to the 'AUX' mode, you will see the welcome screen of the DVD player.
