When Were Voyager I And Voyager II Launched?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Voyager I and Voyager II were two American space probes launched in the 1970s. Voyager I was launched on the 5th September 1977. It passed Jupiter in March 1979 and reached Saturn in November 1980. Voyager II was actually launched a month earlier than Voyager I, on the 20th August 1977 but it was sent on a slower path. It reached Jupiter in July 1979 and Saturn in August 1981.

It went on to Uranus, which it reached in January 1986 and to Neptune in August 1989. The Voyagers then carried on and left the Solar System. In 1995, Voyager I was 5.5 billion miles from Earth and Voyager II was 4.3 billion miles away.

Voyager 1, in 2006 was the most distant human-made object in the cosmos. It is still functioning and will react 100 astronomical units, or 9.3 billion miles from the sun on Tuesday, August 15 at 5:13 p.m. Eastern USA time. That means the spacecraft will be 100 times more distant from the sun than Earth is. Voyager II is right at the edge of the Solar System, and both spacecraft are still sending back data and pictures.
They have outlasted most of the team that sent them into space – only 10 of the scientists originally involved in the launches are still alive.
