The area code 817 refers to the North American area codes, which cover the area of Texas around the Fort Worth area. Area code 817 was supposed to have been flash-cut; that is, immediately changed without a phase-in period. The original code is still not known, although it is speculated that it was area code 915 and a small part of area code 214.
