What Is The Closest We've Come To An African-American President?

I think the closest we have come to an African American President in the history of American politics is Today. I.e the nomination of Barack Obama by Democratic party for 2008 presidential elections. He is the 5th African American Senator in the American history and currently the only senator. He has a great campaign coming up. His fund raising campaign has broken all previous records uptil now. And he has become the first presidential candidate in the US history to get the protection of American Secret service 18 months before the elections. Who knows his popularity in American masses might lead him to the presidential seat.

I agree it is today but not Obama. With Condoleeza Rice as our Secretary of State she is not only the closest to an African American president but also a woman president. My answer is based on the Presidential succession act of 1947 it states that if pres is incapicated then VP, then Speaker of the House , then Pres Pro Tempore of the Senate then Secretary of State who is Condo.
