What Is New Orleans?

The city of New Orleans is the capital and largest city of the state of Louisiana in the United States of America. Louisiana is a former French colony. The city of New Orleans is a major port city from the colonial period to the present day. It is located along the banks of the River Mississippi. It is situated just to the north of where the River Mississippi empties into the Gulf of Mexico. The city of New Orleans is located in the south-eastern part of the state of Louisiana in the United States of America.

The name New Orleans also refers to a type of jazz music which originated in the city of New Orleans. It originated sometime between the late 1910's and the early 1920's with strong 2/4 or 4/4 rhythms. The main instrument used by jazz musicians is the horns. Several types of horns are used in jazz. Each of these horns plays a common melody but they have their own individual variations. Famous Dixie musicians include the trumpeter Louis Armstrong and the clarinettist Sidney Bechet.
