Purley is a surburban development in the London Borough of Croyden.

The nearest places to Purley are Coulsdon, Riddlesdown, Kenley, South Croydon, Sanderstead and Carshalton. The nearest railway stations include Purley railway station and Purley Oaks railway station.

Purley became part of the Croydon Royal District of Surrey in 1894, under the Local Government Act. Purley and the town of Coulsdon formed the Coulsdon and Purley Urban District in 1915, which, under the London Government Act 1963, was abolished in 1965. Its area was transferred to Greater London. It was used to form part of the London Borough of Croydon.

In the 1920's and 1930's, Purley rapidly grew. It provided large houses in a green environment.

The Northeast of Purley carries on into the chalk hill spurs of the North Downs. In a 2002 survey, the Webb Estate made headlines. The survey found that the Webb Estate had over the years attracted the highest-earning residents in the UK.
