Although these were commonly used they were not the norm for all families
Bear in mind that not all family members may be known by the researcher
Not all families conformed to a standard pattern
Children may have died and subsequent children given the same names as their deceased siblings
The first-born daughter was named after her Mother's mother (Maternal Grandmother)
The second born daughter was named after her Father's mother (Paternal Grandmother)
The third daughter was named after her own Mother
The fourth daughter was named after her Mother's eldest sister (Maternal Aunt)
The fifth daughter was named after her Mother's second eldest sister (Maternal Aunt)
Or her Father's eldest sister (Paternal Aunt)
The first-born son was named after his Father's father (Paternal Grandfather)
The second born son was named after his Mother's father (Maternal Grandfather)
The third born son was named after his own Father
The fourth born son was named after his Father's eldest brother (Paternal Uncle)
The fifth son was named after his Father's second brother (Paternal Uncle)
The fifth son was sometimes named after his Mothers eldest brother (Maternal Uncle)
