What's A Stay Of Execution?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The phrase "stay of execution" refers to a situation where a court order has led to the temporary suspension of a court judgement being actioned.

In cases that involve the death penalty, such a stay of execution may be sought to defer the actual execution, possibly in the light of new evidence.

The phrase can also be used in relation to a decision that has been made but moves are then made to reverse the decision.  For example, a news story about the axing of the Gatwick express bus service led to protests from those wanting it to stay, with those protests leading to a reconsideration of that decision – described by news articles as a "stay of execution."
