Answer Question

The right to bear arms, which was the 2nd amendment to the U.S. Constitution, is important because it allows citizens to have a means of personal defense.

It is *not* intended for personal defence, it specifically encourages the existence of a well-armed militia for the defence of the country against invaders. As with neutral but armed to the teeth Switzerland, where every household is *required* to keep an assault rifle, any invading force would find the entire country up in arms against them. The old Patrick Swayze movie 'Red Dawn' provides a fair illustration.
