Dogs that are matched in size have an easier time giving birth naturally. When the male is much bigger than the female--the concern is that the puppies will be too big (have a larger skull than the female's pelvic canal) and mom will not be able to deliver naturally.

However any dog can experience dystocia (difficult or inability to birth) if the female has a abnormal birth canal or weak uterine muscles. Keeping the female healthy during gestation--make sure she is getting appropriate and quality nutrition. Expectant mothers need to be on puppy food to meet calorie and calcium needs.
