How Old Do You Have To Be To Work In A Shop?

Answer Question

18 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

You can start work at the age of 13, although most shop owners would probably want you to help out in the stock room for a few months before they put you behind the till.

Many businesses will actively seek over 16's to work in shops, rather than anyone younger, because the job will involve responsibility and trust. You will be cash handling, speaking to customers and organising the shop - all of which need to be done by someone reliable.

Remember that some shops which are part of a chain - such as Woolworths or Topshop - may not employ anyone under the age of 18. Under 18's will do better to find a little job with a small local greengrocers, bakery or newsagents.

In some shops the minimum age is 14 and in others it is 16 ( it depends on which stores)

In most large chain stores they sell alcohol, tobacco, or other things that are unsuitable for under-18 year old to handle. They get millions of requests every year and take the most suitable for them. This is not, unluckily, 12 or 13 year olds. At that age you may get a paper round or work in a small local corner shop (but it is their choice whether to employ you or not). You might be able to work for friends, neighbours or relatives to earn extra spending money, like washing cars, babysitting or gardening. X

The simple option is to get a small job just to earn what between £10 - £15 a week by having a paper round. Just contact your local newsagents or have a look online and see if you can find a suitable location for where you can earn some cash. I think it is a good way to earn some spending money and a good way to start your job!
