Persephone is said to be the Greek goddess of the underworld. She is the daughter of Demeter and Zeus. Some also refer to her as Kore which is the Greek word for daughter. She was first known of by the Romans through the Doran and the Aeolian cites; Magna Graecia. In this place she was known as Proserpina.
Persephone's tale is said to be a very emotional one. It weaves together a daughter's abduction from a mother, the mother's grief and the return of the child. During the Renaissance she became one of the most important and emblematic figures. She was often shown as being completely robed while carrying a sheaf of grain. An angelic smile became one of her central characteristic that was followed by artists and sculptors years later.
