How And When Did India Gain Independence From Britain?

Answer Question

Independence of India carries with it a lot of history soaked with blood. East India Company which came to India for trading purposes soon exploited the weak princely system prevalent in various states of India and started to over take each of them.

Soon struggles began at small level to get rid of the colonial power and it culminated into a full scale war in 1857 which is now known in the history as Indian Mutiny. The War of 1857 were jointly fought by every ethnic group in India but British forces overcame this hurdle and defeated Indians in most of the battles.

After that war Britain completely overtook the country and brought some good measures which helped people of India to get modern education and awareness to the modern Political Thoughts. The struggle for freedom picked up when M.K. Gandhi returned from South Africa and took over the reigns of Indian Politics and with him he brought him his most successful tool to struggle that was non violence.  Gandhi's non violence movement was the instrument behind the independence of India and Gandhi soon became the sole leader of India for the struggle of independence. India got independence on 15th August 1947.

The main reason india was given independence was because it was not profitable for the british to stay in india after world war 2. They owed the indian 1300 million pounds and had countless debts with different countries i.e. America!!
Of course the situation in india also meant it required a lot of effort and time for the british to solve the disputes between the main political parties in india which were the indian national congress led by nehru and gandhi and also the muslim league led by Muhammad ali jinnah. The muslim league felt that if they were to live in an india led by congress their interests would not be safe guarded and would be treated as second class citizens. Congress always fought for the league not to gain separate electorates.
I believe however that Britain were guided by money and pressures from president roosevelt to leave india!!
