The battle of Britain was basically meant to be a "prelude" to the German's actual planned air and sea attack (dubbed "Operation Sealion") that they wanted to deliver on Britain during the second World War.

It involved the German "Luftwaffe" (or German Airforce) trying to gain the upper hand over the Royal Airforce (of Britain) and was the first major battle between soley by air forces.

The German's believed that they would not be able to sucessfully invade Britain or attack it via sea without first neutralizing their air force. On top of that, the German's also planned to attack aircraft manufacturing plants, places of importance and generally terrorize the English public.

Some experts believe that regardless of the German Airforce gaining superiority in  the skies (which they didn't), that the Royal Navy of Britain would defeat the German Navy anyway.

The British have the battle down as going from  10 July to 31 October 1940 while the German's note is as mid-August 1940 and ending in May 1941, which is when the last of the bomber units were withdrawn.
