What Is An Unequal Crossing Over?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

To understand what unequal crossing over is, let us first understand what meiosis is. It is a reproductive process which involves two consecutive cell divisions, which result in four daughter cells. Unlike mitosis, the daughter cells produced by virtue of meiosis are not similar to each other. Meiosis pertains to the process in which sperm and egg cells are produced. During the process of meiosis, 'unequal crossing over' refers to the state in meiosis, in which the 'crossing over' that transpires between homologous chromosomes (chromosomes that come from separate parents and have corresponding chromosomes)are not equal. Rather than entire alleles (viable DNA codings having a specific position on a chromosome) changing places, only a particular part of each allele switches, and these parts are of different varying lengths.
