Lois Duin Bhearna derives from the lios or enclosure of the fort of the gap.
This description probably refers to Lissateeaun, an ancient, earthern fort which translates as the hill of the fairies, lying one and a half miles from the old castle near Lisdoonvarna.
The town grew in the C19 when it became famous for its Spa. It's now the only active spa town in Ireland.
Before the development of the town it was a scattered community of a few settlements.
The Twin Wells on the banks of the River Aille are famous for the Iron and sulphur which escapes from the rock.
The town is also famous for it's matchmaking traditions.
Each September men and women gather after the main harvest work is done and hope for a marriage partner. Matchmakers did well out of the events!
