Although calcium was known to exist in Roman times as a component of lime, it was not separated out until 1808 when an Englishman, Sir Humphrey Davy, used electrolysis to isolate the element. He dissolved lime in a mercuric oxide mixture and then passed an electric current through it. The calcium separated from the lime and became visible as a soft, alkaline metal that appeared as a silvery-white powder.
Calcium is essential to bones and teeth; it is one of the primary building blocks of the skeleton. Because of its strength, it is also used in making lime, glass, cement and bricks.

Calcium was discovered in 1808 by Sir Humphry Davy in England. The origin of the name is from a Latin word "Calx" that means "lime". It was even known in the very first century and at that time Ancient Romans used it for the preparation of calcium oxide. However, it was isolated and discovered by Sir Humphry Davy. It was separated by the process of electrolysis.

Calcium was known even in the first century when the Ancient Romans used to prepare lime as calcium oxide. However, it was not really isolated up until 1808. It was then that Sir Humphry Davy isolated calcium by electrolyzing a mixture of mercuric oxide and lime in England. Davy was attempting to isolate calcium and on hearing that Berzelius and Pontin had succeeded in preparing calcium amalgam by means of electrolyzing lime in mercury, Davy tried it himself. He had worked with electrolysis all through his life and was also the one who discovered or rather who isolated magnesium, barium and strontium. Calcium is the fifth most abundant element that can be found in the Earth's crust. Calcium is not only indispensable for living organisms, especially in cell physiology, but is also the most widespread metal in many animals.

Let me put this a different way: Discovering calcium? The when and who of it please?

Indeed it was cussing Romans who first stumbled upon this most important building block of life on planet earth, but it was there before they, the calcium it was, yet undiscovered as it may have been, one can only imagine what it was in more olderer times.
Sir William Whateverhisnamewas more defined or refined this steadfast and sturdy elemental mighty mite, than did he discover it.
So I guess it all boils down to what is deemed a "discovery" does it not ?
I mean, did Christopher Columbus "discover" the "Americas" ?
Did Don King "discover" Mike Tyson ?
Did Al Gore "discover" the internets ?
The simple answer my puzzled partner is that no thing is truly independent or objective, all things exist in some relation to other things, but that does not necessarily define or discover any thing.
Let us not judge this Calcium, or take concern as to whom may have first come upon its majesty, let us instead simply enjoy it, bask in its purpose-filled existence, and marvel at its massive multiplicity.

Now lettuce pray, oh Calcium you bring to us hard stuff, harder than we have ever known, yours is the stuff that bones are made of, and an important component of concrete. Oh Calcium you are really holy, you are the kingdom, and the power, and the glory. From now till whenever. Amen.
