Are Dan Brown's Claims About Opus Dei In The Da Vinci Code Credible?

Answer Question

On his website, Dan Brown, states that he "worked very hard to create a fair and balanced depiction of Opus Dei" in his bestselling novel. In fact, the impression given of the conservative Catholic organisation is somewhat innacurate.

The representation of ous Dei in the plot is headed by Silas, an obsessively murderous albino monk who lashes himself ferociously with a whip every day. In fact, there is not one monk in Opus Dei worldwide. The membership of the organisation is made up purely of lay people and together with some secular priests. As for corporal mortification, Opus Dei members do use a cilice (a small, light, metal chain with little prongs worn around the thigh). It is supposed to be uncomfortable, reminding wearers of Christ's suffering on the cross, and is usually worn for an hour or so once a day. Dicsiplines, made of woven cotton string and weigh less then two ounces, are also used by some members. They do not cause any blood or harm and are only used once a week for two or three minutes. The moderate rituals are a far cry from the two fisted floggings carried out by Silas in the novel.
