Pain or discomfort in the head, scalp or neck usually caused by tightness of muscles in these areas is known as a tension headache. Though tension headaches can occur at any age, they are most common in adults and adolescents. A tension headache results from the contraction of neck/scalp muscles which are possibly triggered by stress, anxiety, depression and even activity that may cause the stressful use of a muscle or muscle group. For instance, typing, fine work, use of computers, sleeping in a position awkward for the neck etc. can all cause tension headaches.
The symptoms by which it is identified:
It is a dull headache which is pressure like
It is a general headache but more so severe in the scalp, temples and back of the neck
It is not confined to one side
It feels as if ones head is a tight vise or that ones wearing a tight band
Is triggered by noise, glare, fatigue or stress
And
It occurs either constantly/daily or as an isolated event.
