    Your Fridge price 3 years back = 9,000
    Current price = 16,000

    If you sell the fridge right then price = 10,500

    Profit = 10500 - 9000 = 1500

    If you paint the fridge for 3000 then your fridge cost you = 9000+3000 = 12000

    Profit = 16000 - 12000 = 4000

    With the same profit margin the discount rate will be

    When You bear the Discount rate then your selling cost should be

    Original Price - profit = your cost

    16000 - 1500 = 14500

    Now to know how much discount you can afford

    12000 (1+x) = 14500

    1+x = 14500/12000

    x= 1.208 -1

    x= 0.21

    x= 21%

    You can give 21% discount. To get 1500 profit if you sell the painted fridge.

      This is a problem right, I mean it's not really happening, it's an assignment to work out?  Because painted or not, you cannot sell a 3 year old fridge as new.  That would be illegal.  Plus, if it's 3 years old the warranty has likely expired too.  Trying to sell it for $16,000  or as new would be fraud.  So in reality, you would have to take a depreciation off the original $9,000 that you paid.  Now if you had an appraisal from a reputable appliance store you might get by with selling it for a small profit above what you originally paid, given the replacement price is $7,000 more than what you paid.  In this instance, if it cost you $3,000 to paint it, you would pretty well wipe out your profit.  Jiminy Christmas, where are you buying refrigerators for $9,000, much less $16,000 - that must be some fridge!
