Why Is Rainfall Not A Reliable Source Of Fostering Crops In Pakistan?

Answer Question

Pakistan had decided to adopt the canal irrigation system due to many reasons.  One of the most significant factors that motivated Pakistan to take the alternative route of canal irrigation to cultivate its crops was the ineffectiveness of rainfall in the country.  The reasons why rainfall could not be relied on for the growth of crops are inclusive of high variability of distribution in various regions of the world (this refers to a dearth of consistency and evenness in rainfall distribution), along with the long dry spells that follow a bout of rainfall.  In addition to that, the rainfall takes place in the form of heavy showers, which contributes towards augmenting the surface run-off.  It is not just the inconsistency of rainfall in terms of regional distribution but also in terms of timing.  There is no even pattern of rainfall in Pakistan, something that is not to be depended upon at all, as Pakistan is an agro-based economy.  Moreover the rainy days in Pakistan are smaller, which is an insufficient magnitude of durability for the nurturing of crops.  Last but not the least, the heavy rate of evaporation and transpiration are also factors that reduce the degree of reliability of rain as a prime source of crop cultivation.
