    The best thing you could do is go here which lists all the world's major events for 2004.

    Some I think are note worthy are:

    - NASA's MER-B (Opportunity) lands on Mars.
    - Scientists in South Korea cloned 30 human embryos.
    - Earthquake in Northern Morocco in the Rif mountains near the city of Al Hoceima, kills 400. Ait Kamara is destroyed and 517 are killed.
    - "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" scoops up 11 oscars at the Academy Awards.
    - Madrid train bombings.
    - Arsenal go unbeaten in the English Premiership season, 38 games without loss.
    - Lance Armstrong won his 6th Tour de France.
    - Michael Schumacher became the most sucessful Formula 1 driver ever.

    I'm sure there are plenty more you can find in there!
