Why Don't Dogs Wear Seat Belts? Surely They Are Just As Likely To Be Killed In A Car Accident?

Certainly there is much guidance and advice around saying that animals should not be transported loose in a car. This is for their own safety and the driver's -- if you have ever travelled with a cat (for instance) loose in a car, you know how potentially hazardous they can be to the driver.
The government's own guidance is that small pets should be in carriers, and large ones should be strapped down, with a belt or in a large cage. At the very least, large dogs should be behind a dog guard (away from front of vehicle).
There is a small campaign going on to make owners more aware of the dangers of pets travelling loose in cars (see this about Worcestershire CC).
But at the moment there isn't a lot of political will to pursue it. I guess it depends on what your philosophy is about what kind of laws we should make. Would it be a good use of limited government time to make laws about this, and would people just resent it as further interference in their lives?

Dogs shouldn't really be in the area of the car where seat belts are for it to wear. A dog should be in the boot out of harm from the driver. also dogs have quick reactions to danger and things coming at them (unless they're asleep). Someone should invent a doggy style seat belt!

Dog's most likely do not wear seatbelts due to the owners not knowing where to find them. Dog's are likely to be killed unless in a secure position or crate. There are seat belts for dogs. They are a harness to fit the dog that fastens into your seat belt securely. You can get them through DrsFosterSmith.com
