How Do You Get Chickenpox?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

Chickenpox is easily passed from one person to another. Someone who has not yet had chickenpox, and who comes into contact with an infected person, usually catches it. This is why the disease is so common in childhood – it can pass from one member of a primary school or nursery class to all its other members within a couple of months.

The virus is spread by direct contact with a person who has broken chickenpox blisters or indirect contact with clothes or other belongings that have been contaminated by the infected fluid from the spots. Saliva and nasal secretions also contain the virus and so coughing and sneezing causes virus particles to be jetted into the air and these can be breathed in by other people close by.

People incubating chickenpox are not infectious immediately and only become able to pass on the disease from about two days before the rash breaks out until about five days after the spots have begun to crust over.
