The doctor goes in and opens the vagina up with a speculum so he can visualize it and then go in with a tool that takes a small sample of your tissue from the cervix. The tissue is sent of for analysis. There is very little discomfort. The worse thing is the embarrassment part of it but remember your doctor does so many of these that he or she does not even think anything about it. The best thing to do is relax. It only take a few minutes and it will be over.

You lay on your back with your legs bent and open and the cells are scrapped away for examination. It doesn't hurt - just relax. The thought of it is worse than having it done!
