What Is The History Behind Washington D.C. Being The Capital Of The United States?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The United States of America was the first country ever to strategize a capital city just for the exclusive purpose of holding the seat of its government.  This example was ensued by countries like Australia, Pakistan and Brazil.

Historically the city is named after the founder of the nation and the first president of the United States, George Washington.  Washington D.C. (District of Columbia) was made the capital of the country in 1800 when the American parliament assembled there in the middle of November.  Before this, Congress met in eight different cities for holding the parliament meetings.  As a result, competition was tough amongst the eight cities to secure the seat of government.

To solve matters, it was mutually decided in the year 1790 that the capital city should be a district not exceeding 10 square miles on the Potomac River 'at some place between the mouths of the Eastern Branch and the Connogo cheague'.  Based on these benchmarks, it was Washington D.C., which was made the capital of the United States.
