What Are The Basics Of A Good Essay-writing Style?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Whatever its subject or level, no essay is good unless it's clear. Each point made should be explained and supported by evidence. There should be no more than one major idea in each paragraph, and where one idea leads to another, you need to show the links. Keep looking back at the title to make sure you are only answering the question and keeping to the point.
Although clear, your style shouldn't be too informal. There are conventions for essay-writing – you should use full forms, such as "he is" and "television" rather than "he's" and "TV." Slang should never be used, and it's also based to avoid a personal approach. "I think" isn't very helpful in an essay. It's better to say "It seems" or something to show that your focus is on the essay topic, not yourself.
Also, remember to finish properly – end with a summing-up or statement of opinion. Otherwise it looks as if you didn't have time to finish!
