What Is The Origin Of The Surname Meer?

My family is trying to find the origin of the name Meer and the name Sauer. We know that they were from Germany. We are trying to find out if either or both names are Jewish in origin can you help me please?

    The meaning of the surname MEER is "dweller by the sea".

    Dutch: Topographic name for someone who lived by a body of water, Middle Dutch mere 'lake'.

    Jewish: Variant of Meyer 2.

    Muslim: From a Persian title, a shortened form of Arabic amir 'prince', 'commander' (see Amir). This name is used all over the Indian subcontinent.
