The term urban is usually designated to a city or a town. An urban region is a region which has enlarged density of human-created structures as compared to regions around it.

An urban region is often referred to as a city or town. Urban region are usually shaped and further urbanized via the method of urbanization. Calculating the size of an urbanized region helps in evaluating the population density and urban sprawl, and in determining urban and rural population. The minimum density requirement is usually 400 persons per square kilometre.

In countries like Japan urbanized regions are illustrated as contiguous regions which are thickly populated. In France urban regions are known as unites urbaines, which plainly means "urban units" according to the French language.
