Staples sells that model, and if you go to their website, you can find reviews there from people who have purchased it.  I've been looking at reviews for that model for about a week now, trying to find out more about it, and most of what I have seen has been very positive.  There is also a write-up in Wikipedia about it, that gives you the specs and differences between the DV7x and DV7t.  So far, from what I've found, this is an excellent laptop, and Staples so far has the best price on it (their model is the DV7x).

I just purchased this laptop HP Pavilion dv7-1232nr from staples for 649.00.  It is a very good deal for your average user.  Decent processor speed, 4 gb ram and upgradable to 8 gb. Graphic card ok. Vista is better than you hear people say.  Not a "gamer laptop" but if you want to surf the net, manager your pictures, store some videos. And do word processing this is a good start.

I totally agree with your analysis, except for one thing.

Vista  is WAY worse than people say.
The worst operating system ever developed for any system.
For an experiment, take the HP Pavilion dv7-1232nr, if one can, format t he hard drive and install XP.
Then run it and watch the enormous performance gain as well as recovering of disk space for t he ridiculously large Vista 64.

Then to really see the light. Format the drive and load a Linux system like Ubuntu on it. Then see the performance absolutely scream, without the horrific design of Windows at all.

As for Vista 64 itself, Microsoft has done a piss poor job about getting 64bit drivers for other products.

Vista is a total embarrassment to Microsoft, something I know personally.

The best is to try never to Microsoft products at all and see your performance drastically increase as well as have your PC much, much, much more secure. Use openoffice.org instead of the Big Bloat of Ms Office. Foxfire is in a another league from the bloat crap and security hole of IE.
Ubuntu (or other Linux system), software will run faster on an old 386 PC than using Vista 64.
As they are a monopoly, Microsoft/Apple (virtually the same company), is concerned only about market domination and limiting technology, than it is about providing any  type of technical excellence . They want to get all of us tied into their web of products.
