I Live Near Philadelphia. I Found A Snake In My Yard That Was About 4 Feet Long Or So, Had A Small Black Head, A Black Body With Red (or Bright Orange) Bands. What Type Of Snake Was It?

What type of snake did i discover in my back yard? It had a small black head, long black body with orange or red bands, about 4 feet or so. It did NOT have any yellow bands or coloring anywhere, although its appearance is similar to the coral snake in size and shape. Is it dangerous, and would there be many more in my area potentially? Thanks.

You probably encountered the Coral snake. It is a highly poisonous snake and is found in most parts of the US. The coral snake is long (about 24 inches) in length with red and thin yellow bands that touch. The coral snake is very poisonous and its venom  can paralyze the nervous system. It hangs after biting, injecting as much venom as possible and  the coral snake bite is usually fatal. However,  there are three types of coral snakes; The Arizona Coral King Snake, The California Mountain King Snake and the Arizona coral snake. Out of these the California  Mountain King snake is considered harmless. You can find the pictures of all these types as well as the varying descriptions to be better able to identify which one of these you encountered, on this site.

This snake in particular did NOT have any yellow bands or markings. It had a black small head, and black body with touching orange or red rings, about the same size as the coral snake has, but no yellow bands. Just red and black appearing symmetrical in size to each other. Can you help to identify and to advise if it is dangerous should I see another one? thanks
