Where Is Lake Tana?

    Lake Tana is the resource of Blue Nile it is the biggest lake in Ethiopia. It is around 84 kilometres in length and approximately 66 kilometres in breath. It is situated in Ethiopia's north-west highlands.

    The lake has a number of islands, which keep varying of regular basis depending of the altitude of the lake. The lake level has dropped by approximately six feet in the last 400 years. According to Manoel de Almeida during the 17th century there were around 21 islands out here. Seven to eight of these islands were monasteries.

    It is said when James Bruce travelled to this region there were around forty five inhabited Islands here. The remains of historic Ethiopian kings and the treasures of the church have been placed in isolated island monasteries.
