Modern-day science fiction (abbreviated as sci-fi) is a genre of literature that combines history, science and the make-believe or fantasy. Sci-fi also takes into accounts such aspects of life as the physical, technological, historical, sociological, metaphysical, psychological and philosophical aspects.

It is an extremely broad and interesting genre of literature, and a particular person cannot be pinpointed as the founder of modern science fiction. However, it can be divided into several eras. The earliest instances of science fiction writing can be traced back to the days of Lucian, Voltaire and Mary Shelley. Even Mark Twain has dabbled in the sci-fi genre. H.G. Wells (1866-1946) and Jules Verne (1828-1905) are considered pioneers of the genre in recent times. But the best-known exponents of this style of writing in the most recent times are the Russian-born American author Isaac Asimov (1920-1992), Robert A. Heinlein and Arthur C. Clarke, who are considered as master storytellers of the modern era.
