Can I Get Free Legal Copies Of Kids Birth Certificates If No Longer Living In State They Were Born?

I'd like to open savings accounts for my two children but I need legal copies of their birth certificates to do so. We no longer live in the State they were born in and my estranged spouse won't give me their birth certificates. I am disabled and live on a fixed income so I can't afford the extraordinarily high fees online services charge to get these records. Is there anyway I can get them for free?

I am not aware of any places.  If you are the legal guardian and are placed on the birth cirtificate as the mother or father I believe you can apply for one.  But nothing is free these days.  They do not even give out hospital copies of birth certificates these days either nor have they in quite a while.  I believe the cost of a birth certificate depending on the state ranges around $25.00 plus shipping and handling then you can get extra copies and pay more.  You can live in a different state and apply for one.  You just have to get a hold of the states vital statistics dept.  and go from there.  But I am sure it wont be free.  Even when newborns are born you usually have to pay for there first birth certificate too, which is crazy.  Good luck.

You can get them from the records department in the court house in the county they were born in. Look up the phone # online and call them. They will tell you what you need to do. It was about 25.00 last time I talked to someone who had to do it.

Depending on where you live there could be various sources you could use. I don't know about the free part but you could probably get a discounted price given your situation. It just might cost more online than your surrounding networks. Try the obvious first, Social Security office, disability center/office and depending on the age of the kids try a military recruiter (they can pull a lot of strings, of course they use our money to do so so their resources are almost unlimited). It will require you making a lot of calls and/or emails. Make sure you have all the vital information - including proof of custody.
