Canada has a long standing history with both British and French settlements. The first English speaking people arrived in Newfoundland around the 1580's and these were mainly fishermen from England's West Country and Ireland. They were closely followed by fur trappers who were mainly of Scottish descent.
The French had also ventured north in the late 1500's and in 1608 a big settlement was established at Quebec. In North America the competition for land with the British, French, Dutch and Spanish was great all attempting to establish settlements. In Canada however it was just the British competing with the French and in 1670 the Hudson Bay Company was formed by the British.
Then followed the Seven Year War between England and France and in 1763 the French relinquished all their territories in North America. The French were well established in Canada however and retained their French heritage but under British rule.
