I have a month to month lease and we told our landlord that we were going to be looking for something cheaper almost 2 months in advance and ever since we have had problems. I sent a 30 day notice to him in the mail and now he says that he is going to send us a 15 day notice. Is this allowed?

I don't believe so unless you are breaking your lease in any way and being evicted for some reason. I would call an attorney in your area. They can give you free advice in most offices they will give you your first appt. For free and you can ask all the questions you want, depending on the attorney. Then you can tell the landlord you did talk to an attorney if he gets to be a problem. It all depends on the laws in your city and why he is giving you a 15 day notice, if you are not breaking your lease. Also, if you had a deposit and you are not breaking your lease and you did give a 30 day notice then he needs to give the deposit back if it is in the lease agreement. Some landlords state in the lease that they will take out a cleaning fee usually for the carpets. But to get the deposit back you have to leave the place in as good as condition as when you moved into it and as clean. Good luck.

Yes if you pay rent in his place he can as long as it doesn't breach the clause in the contract you have with him.
