All I've ever heard of feline leukemia before is that it is highly contagious and can be spread to other cats if they have not yet been vaccinated. On the other side of the situation is that there is a natural treatment available for it but you have to research a book which is long out of print: "The Very Healthy Cat Book". In it is a successful treatment for a hospital setting which with a little bit of ingenuity could be adapted to home treatment. Don't give up on your cat.

Check with your vet, I have two cats and understand as long as your step daughters cats have been inoculated against feline leukemia they should be safe against exposure to the same. If not, I wouldn't risk it.
